Europe’s Solar and Wind Energy Markets Experience Mixed Results in April

In the first week of April, solar photovoltaic energy production across major European markets demonstrated a mixed performance compared to the previous week. Overall, solar generation benefitted from favorable seasonal conditions characterized by longer daylight hours and increased solar irradiation. However, the growth in production was moderate, with average temperatures rising by approximately 2 °C. Specifically, Portugal recorded a 13% increase in photovoltaic output, while Germany and Spain saw increases of 2.7% and 1.9%, respectively. Conversely, France and Italy experienced declines of 14% and 5%, indicating regional disparities in solar energy performance.

Looking ahead to the second week of April, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting suggest that Germany and Italy may witness significant boosts in photovoltaic energy production following relatively moderate outputs in the preceding week. In contrast, the Iberian Peninsula markets, which had previously shown high production levels, are likely to face downward adjustments.

On the wind energy front, all analyzed European markets reported declines during the first week of April when compared to the last week of March. Portugal experienced one of the most substantial drops at 28%, followed closely by Italy with a decrease of 10%. The forecasts for the second week indicate that Italy and France may see further reductions in wind energy production. However, Portugal is anticipated to rebound significantly after its sharp decline in the prior week.
