Europe’s Energy Landscape: Solar and Wind Trends in Late January

As the energy landscape in Europe continues to evolve, late January showcased notable fluctuations in solar and wind energy production across various markets. The fourth week of January highlighted a significant rebound in solar photovoltaic energy generation, particularly within the German and French markets, where Germany experienced a remarkable 73% increase compared to the prior week. France also reported a solid 12% rise in solar output. However, contrasting trends emerged from the Iberian Peninsula and Italy, where solar energy production declined. Specifically, Spain and Portugal saw reductions of 3.2% and 4.5%, respectively, while Italy faced a more pronounced drop of 16%.

Looking ahead to the week of January 26, projections from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting suggest a reversal for Italy, with an anticipated increase in solar production. In contrast, both Spain and Germany are expected to witness declines in their solar generation outputs.

Wind energy production revealed a different narrative during the week of January 19. Most major European markets recorded gains, with Spain leading the way at an impressive 120% increase following previous declines. Portugal followed closely with a 75% rise, while Italy and France reported increases of 65% and 5.9%, respectively. Notably, Germany’s wind market faced challenges, recording a decline of 9.1%, marking its third consecutive week of reduced output.

For the final week of January, forecasts from AleaSoft indicate an expected uptick in wind energy production across Spain, Germany, and Italy. Conversely, declines are anticipated in France and Portugal’s wind generation capacities. These trends underline the dynamic nature of renewable energy production across Europe as countries navigate varying climatic conditions and market demands.
