Europe: Solar and wind energy production sees notable increases and declines in April 2025

In the first week of April, solar photovoltaic energy production saw an increase across most major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. Germany experienced the most significant growth, with a 54% rise, while France and Italy saw increases of 28% and 41%, respectively. However, solar energy production decreased in the Iberian Peninsula, with Spain experiencing a 10% decline and Portugal facing a more substantial drop of 32%.

During the week of March 31, several European markets achieved record solar photovoltaic energy production. On March 31, France recorded its highest daily solar output in March, generating 127 GWh. Germany reached a new daily record for April on April 3, with 352 GWh, while Italy hit its all-time highest solar photovoltaic energy production on April 4, at 135 GWh.

Looking ahead to the week of April 7, solar energy production is expected to rise in Spain according to AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s predictions, while it is anticipated to decline in both Germany and Italy.

Wind energy production also saw an increase across most major European markets during the first week of April. France and Portugal led the way with 86% and 71% increases, respectively, while Germany saw a 16% rise, and Italy recorded a 20% increase. On the other hand, Spain continued its downward trend, with a 17% drop in wind energy production, marking the second consecutive week of decline.

Portugal also achieved a record for daily wind energy generation in April, producing 99 GWh on Friday, April 4.

Looking ahead to the week of April 7, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts a decline in wind energy production across all major European markets, AleaSoft reports.
