Europe Sees Significant Increases in Solar and Wind Energy Production

In late December, European electricity markets experienced a notable surge in solar and wind energy generation, marking a pivotal moment for renewable energy production across the continent. During the week of December 22, solar photovoltaic output rebounded sharply after four weeks of declines, with Portugal leading the way with a remarkable 48% increase. Spain followed closely with a 21% rise, while Italy and France reported increases of 29% and 23%, respectively.

This resurgence in solar energy was highlighted by several markets achieving new daily records for December. Germany’s solar production reached a peak of 87 GWh on December 25, while Italy and France recorded outputs of 66 GWh and 54 GWh, respectively, on December 28. Such figures underscore the growing capacity and efficiency of solar technologies within these markets.

AleaSoft Energy Forecasting anticipates continued growth in solar energy production for the week of December 29, particularly in Italy and Spain. However, Germany is projected to see a decrease in its solar output during this period, indicating potential fluctuations in market dynamics.

<pWind energy production also demonstrated robust growth during the same week, with Italy experiencing an impressive 80% increase—the largest gain for the second consecutive week. Spain and France followed suit with increases of 21% and 20%, respectively. Conversely, Germany saw a modest rise of 15%, recovering from previous declines, while Portugal faced a 12% decrease in wind generation.

<pOn December 24, France achieved its highest daily wind energy output since late January at 404 GWh, further illustrating the volatility and potential of wind resources in meeting energy demands during peak periods.

<pLooking forward to the week of December 29, forecasts indicate that wind production will likely increase in Germany and Italy but may decline in Spain, France, and Portugal. These projections highlight the ongoing shifts within renewable energy markets as they adapt to changing weather patterns and demand fluctuations.
