European electricity prices fall below €85/MWh in late December amid strong renewables and weaker demand

Electricity prices across Europe experienced a notable decline in late December, driven by an increase in renewable energy generation and a decrease in overall demand. During the week of December 22, average electricity prices fell below €85/MWh in most European markets, with the exceptions being the UK and Italian IPEX market, which reported higher averages of €91.33/MWh and €108.41/MWh, respectively. The Nordic market stood out with the lowest weekly average at €38.34/MWh, while France and Germany recorded averages of €69.41/MWh and €83.02/MWh.

On specific days within this period, significant price movements were observed. For instance, on December 25, the Nordic market achieved its lowest daily average of the week at €11.80/MWh, marking a significant drop since early November. Similarly, Belgium and Germany reported their lowest daily prices since November 5 and November 2, respectively, with Belgium at €60.83/MWh on December 24 and Germany at €69.38/MWh on the same day. Meanwhile, Italy’s prices dipped to €102.89/MWh on December 27, the lowest since October 27.

Interestingly, Italy was the only market to see daily prices exceed €100/MWh during this week, peaking at €113.77/MWh on December 22. This price behavior highlights regional disparities influenced by varying demand levels and renewable energy contributions.

The underlying factors for these price declines can be attributed to increased production from wind and solar sources alongside a reduction in electricity demand across Europe. Looking ahead into January 2024, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts a potential uptick in prices across major markets due to anticipated higher demand coupled with lower wind production levels during that time frame. However, sustained growth in wind generation capacity in Germany and Italy could mitigate price increases in those regions.

As market participants prepare for the forthcoming weeks, understanding these dynamics will be crucial for strategic decision-making amidst fluctuating electricity prices influenced by seasonal demand patterns and renewable energy output trends.
