Gross electricity production in Bosnia and Herzegovina reached 1,384 GWh in March 2026, according to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). This was down from 1,494 GWh in the same month of the previous year. The data show a year-on-year decline in total generation output.
Generation mix: hydro share rises while thermal output falls
Hydropower plants accounted for the largest share of production at 46.5%. Thermal power plants followed at 46.1%, while solar and wind together contributed 7.4%. The figures indicate a generation mix that remains balanced but slightly tilted toward hydropower.
Net production from hydropower reached 641 GWh, up 15.5% year-on-year. Thermal power generation fell to 569 GWh, which is 23.1% lower than in March 2025. The change points to reduced thermal generation compared with the prior year’s level.
Electricity generated from renewable sources, including wind and solar, totaled 102 GWh. Output declined by 3.8% year-on-year. The figures reflect modest variability in non-hydro renewable generation despite longer-term growth trends referenced in the dataset.
Imports and exports change as generation shifts
Electricity imports rose by 33.6% to 437 GWh. This compares with 327 GWh in the same period last year. Exports declined slightly over the same timeframe.
Electricity exports fell by 3.4%, reaching 732 GWh. In March 2025, exports were 758 GWh. The movement indicates a modest weakening of net export capacity.
Lignite output declines and gas imports rise
Lignite production in Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to 593,000 tons, down 3.6% year-on-year. Production of brown coal dropped more sharply by 52.3%, totaling 230,000 tons. The figures are presented as reflecting ongoing pressure on domestic coal mining output.
Natural gas imports increased to 26.65 million cubic meters. This is up 11% compared with 24 million cubic meters in March 2025. The dataset links the higher level to slightly stronger gas demand within the energy system, including balancing requirements and substitution dynamics in electricity generation.
