Gross electricity production in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) reached 534 GWh in April 2026. That level was 9.4% lower year-on-year than 589 GWh recorded in April 2025. The decline was linked to lower thermal fuel availability and reduced coal production activity across the system.
Generation mix and net output in April 2026
Hydropower plants accounted for 44% of total gross electricity generation, while thermal power plants contributed 44.2%. Wind farms made up 11.8%, keeping wind as a smaller but growing component of the mix. The share split reflected continued reliance on both hydropower resources and fossil-based generation.
Net electricity production in April totaled 500 GWh. Hydropower generated 231 GWh, thermal power produced 206 GWh, and wind farms delivered 63 GWh. Hydropower remained the largest source of net generation, ahead of thermal output.
Imports and exports shift during the month
Electricity trade flows changed during the same period, with imports totaling 86 GWh. Imports were down from 105 GWh in April 2025. Exports fell to 71 GWh, compared with 202 GWh in the same month last year.
The reduction in exports indicated lower outbound activity relative to April 2025. The figures also pointed to reduced surplus availability for external markets during the month.
Coal and coke production developments
Brown coal production totaled 228,343 tons, which was 20.6% lower than the 287,615 tons recorded for 2024 levels. Lignite output declined to 88,297 tons in April 2026 from 124,116 tons in April 2025, a drop of 28.9%. These movements reflected pressure on domestic coal mining output and fuel supply constraints.
Coke production fell to zero in April 2026 after the permanent closure of the Lukavac coke plant . The closure shifted the industrial fuel chain and reduced coke-derived outputs within FBiH’s energy and industrial system .
