Croatia, Petrol puts into operation the 32 MW Ljubač WPP

Slovenian energy group Petrol officially put into operation on Tuesday the 32.4 MW Ljubac wind farm, located near Knin. Nine Nordex wind turbines, with an individual capacity of 3.6 MW, will produce 96 GWh of electricity per year, which is enough for the average consumption of about 30,000 households.

WPP Ljubac is Petrol’s first project in the sector of electricity production from renewable sources, which was realized without financial support or subsidies. The value of the investment is 37 million euros.

WPP Ljubač is the second Petrol wind farm in Croatia. In 2017, the Slovenian group built the Glunča WPP near Šibenik, which also has nine wind turbines. The power of Glunča WPP is 20.7 MW. It produces between 45 and 50 GW h of electricity per year, which is enough for the average consumption of about 15 thousand households.

Boris Antolović, President of the Management Board of Petrol in Croatia, reminds that VE Ljubač started its trial operation in July last year.

He added that Croatia is one of the most strategically important markets for Petrol. Petrol’s focus in Croatia is on expanding its business to energy, services and energy transition, which includes investments in the production of electricity from renewable sources.

Nada Drobne Popović, President of the Management Board of Petrol, states that Croatia is the second home for the company, emphasizing two key projects – WPP Ljubač and last year’s purchase of Crodux derivatives two.

Green energy

The Petrol Group has been present in the renewable electricity generation sector for a long time. The group currently has two wind farms, 30 smaller solar power plants and six small hydropower plants. Petrol implements most projects for the production of electricity from renewable sources in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, where there is a great natural potential for wind, sun and water.

At the end of 2021, the Group had a total installed capacity for the production of electricity from renewable sources of 68.9 MW. By 2025, Petrol plans to reach a capacity of 160 MW.

The transition to green energy means that in the period 2021-2025, the Petrol Group will allocate 35 percent of the total investment potential in the amount of 698 million euros for investments in energy transition, most of which for investments in renewable energy production.

Petrol’s next step on the path of energy transition is to invest in three solar power plants in the Knin area, with a total capacity of 22 MW, with an expected electricity production of 29 GWh.

The total value of the investment is estimated at 17 million euros, and the production of electricity should start at the beginning of 2023.
