The Croatian Power Exchange (CROPEX) recorded strong growth in electricity trading activity in June 2026, with total traded volumes reaching 1,314,010.2 MWh. This represented a 19.1% increase compared with May and a 9.1% year-on-year increase, reflecting stronger market participation and the continued development of Croatia’s organized electricity market.
The total traded volume consisted of 986,130.5 MWh on the day-ahead market and 327,879.7 MWh on the intraday market. Average daily traded volume on the day-ahead market reached 32,871 MWh, highlighting the increasing importance of exchange-based electricity trading for market participants in Croatia and the wider Southeast European region.
Despite higher liquidity, price levels increased significantly during the month. The average daily baseload price on the day-ahead market reached €115.90/MWh, which was 11.9% higher than in May. The increase was even more pronounced during peak periods, with the average peak price reaching €250.97/MWh, representing a sharp 286% monthly increase and reflecting stronger pressure during high-demand hours.
The intraday market also recorded higher prices, with the average traded price reaching €120.34/MWh, up 12.6% compared with the previous month. The combination of higher prices and increased trading volumes indicates a market environment shaped by tighter supply conditions, stronger demand dynamics, and growing value of short-term flexibility.
CROPEX was established on 11 March 2016 through cooperation with Nord Pool, one of Europe’s leading electricity exchanges, and is jointly owned by the Croatian Transmission System Operator (HOPS) and the Croatian Energy Market Operator (HROTE). The exchange launched its intraday market in April 2017, expanding trading opportunities beyond the day-ahead segment.
A major milestone was reached on 19 June 2018, when the Croatian and Slovenian transmission system operators and power exchanges successfully coupled the CROPEX day-ahead market with the Multi-Regional Coupling (MRC) markets through the Croatia-Slovenia border. This integration strengthened Croatia’s connection with European electricity markets and improved opportunities for cross-border trading.
With renewable generation expanding and regional electricity flows becoming increasingly important, CROPEX is expected to continue supporting market liquidity, price transparency, and deeper integration of Southeast Europe’s electricity markets.
