Bulgaria: IBEX trading growth highlights strengthening role in SEE’s power market

The Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange (IBEX) recorded continued growth in electricity trading activity in June 2026, with total day-ahead market volumes reaching 2,707,995.2 MWh. This represented a 1% increase compared with the previous month and an 18.5% rise year on year, confirming the expanding role of organized power trading in Bulgaria’s electricity market.

The average daily traded volume on the IBEX day-ahead market reached 90,266.5 MWh during June. Despite higher trading activity, average baseload prices eased slightly, reaching €98.08/MWh, down 3% compared with May’s €101.07/MWh. The decline reflected softer market conditions during the month, while the average peak price moved in the opposite direction, increasing by 6% to €64.88/MWh, indicating continued pressure during higher-demand periods.

Market participation also continued to strengthen, with 155 registered participants active on the IBEX day-ahead market in June, one more than in the previous month. The growing number of participants highlights improving liquidity and the increasing importance of exchange-based electricity trading for market participants across Southeast Europe.

Activity on the intraday continuous market remained significant, with total traded volume reaching 673,371.5 MWh, although this was 9% lower than the previous month. The average weighted intraday price stood at €88.51/MWh, representing a modest 1% decline compared with May.

The June results demonstrate the continued development of Bulgaria’s organized electricity market, supported by stronger trading participation, higher liquidity, and increasing integration with regional power markets. As renewable generation expands and cross-border electricity flows become more important, IBEX is expected to play a growing role in improving price transparency, market efficiency, and investment signals across Southeast Europe.
