Croatia: CROPEX’ 2020 annual report

CROPEX – Croatian electricity exchange has published an annual report for 2020. The report states that the traded volumes of electricity on the day-ahead market increased by 15 % in 2020, to more than 6 TWh, while the average price of base energy fell by 22.8 % to 38 euros/MWh, or 42 euros/MWh for peak load.

Since 2018, the Croatian day-ahead market has been connected to the European SDAC market via the Croatian-Slovenian border, so CROPEX’s intraday market has grown by as much as 265 % to 370,515 MWh. During 2019, more than 10,000 trade operations were performed, which increased to almost 71,000 in 2020. The average traded energy price on the intraday market was EUR 38.3/MWh, which is a decrease of 23 % compared to the previous year. It is pointed out that the highest prices were achieved in the autumn and winter months.

CROPEX held 27 different auctions, and the majority referred to auctions of certificates of origin, as well as four auctions for the sale of electricity from the ECO balance group.

Two new members entered the market in 2020, so that at the end of the year there were a total of 22 registered traders on the day-ahead market, with 15 of them registered on the intraday market as well.

Market development indicator, the so-called Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) averaged 839, which is below 1,000 and indicates a developed market, but it should be borne in mind that in the sales segment the HHI Index was 1,754, which means that it is a moderately concentrated market, while the HHI for the sale of electricity was less than 1000, which is an optimal value.
