Bulgaria’s power prices jump 16% as September trading volume hits 3.1 TWh

Bulgarian day-ahead electricity prices rose 16% in September, increasing wholesale purchasing costs on the Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange as traded volumes also expanded.

The average baseload price reached €166.24/MWh, up from €143.15/MWh in August. The average peak price also increased, rising 15% to €127.51/MWh.

Day-ahead trading volume totalled 3.10 TWh, representing a 2% month-on-month increase and a 28.6% rise year on year. Average daily turnover stood at approximately 103.3 GWh.

The exchange recorded 155 registered day-ahead market participants in September, unchanged from the previous month. The difference between baseload and peak prices continued to highlight the importance of consumption timing for electricity buyers.

Activity also strengthened in the continuous intraday market, where traded volume increased 6% to 1.18 TWh. The weighted average intraday price rose 11% to €156.87/MWh.

The intraday price was approximately €9.37/MWh below the day-ahead baseload average. However, the two figures reflect different trading patterns and should not be interpreted as indicating an automatic saving for market participants.

Overall, September brought a combination of higher electricity prices and increased trading activity, leaving market participants facing greater wholesale purchasing costs while also using intraday trading to manage adjustments closer to delivery.
