Bulgaria’s electricity market demonstrated significant growth in 2025, with total electricity production reaching 40.11 TWh, marking a 5.62% increase compared to the previous year. This rise reflects a robust recovery in the nation’s generation capabilities, as reported by the electricity transmission system operator, ESO.
Electricity consumption also rose, climbing by 4.88% to a total of 38.76 TWh. This uptick in demand allowed Bulgaria to sustain its status as a net exporter of electricity, achieving net exports of 1.36 TWh throughout the year.
The role of conventional energy sources remains pivotal in Bulgaria’s power landscape. Baseload plants, including coal and nuclear facilities, produced a combined 28.96 TWh, an increase of 1.76% from 2024 levels. This underscores the ongoing reliance on traditional energy generation methods within the country’s energy mix.
In contrast, renewable energy sources (RES) have made substantial gains in 2025. Electricity generated from RES connected to the transmission network surged by 19.6% to 3,980.7 GWh. Additionally, RES generation within the distribution network rose by 19.71% to 3,944.7 GWh, indicating a significant expansion of decentralized renewable capacity across Bulgaria.
The increasing share of renewables highlights Bulgaria’s strategic shift towards cleaner energy solutions while maintaining a balanced approach with conventional power generation. As the nation continues to enhance its energy infrastructure and diversify its production sources, these developments will play a critical role in shaping Bulgaria’s future energy landscape.
