Bulgaria, TPP Bobov Dol plans the construction of solar power plant

Coal-fired thermal power plant Bobov Dol said that it is considering investing some 50 million euros in the construction of 100 MW solar power plant, which will enable the production of green hydrogen that will help reduce the plant’s CO2 emissions.

The plant’s CEO Lyubomir Spasov said that the construction permit for the plant has been received in May and the plan is to start construction in early 2023, with the commissioning expected in 2025. He said that, the solar power plant will also enable the diversification of the plant’s energy sources, which currently uses coal and biomass.

Earlier this year, Spasov said that the plant will start the construction of a 2 kilometers long pipeline that will connect the plant to the national gas transmission system, which should be completed by the end of 2022. The plant’s switch to natural gas will also require the installation of a gas turbine with power output of 180 MW, which will run on a 50:50 mix of natural gas and green hydrogen.

TPP Bobov Dol is 630 MW coal-fired power plant commissioned in 2000, located in southwestern Bulgaria. It was privatized in 2008 and local consortium Energy MK is the plant’s sole owner.
