Recent statistics from Bulgaria’s electricity transmission system operator, ESO, indicate a 2.45% year-on-year decrease in electricity production for the period from 1 January to 18 January 2026, culminating in a total generation of 2.37 TWh. In contrast, electricity consumption during the same timeframe rose by 4.18%, reaching 2.52 TWh. This imbalance has resulted in net electricity imports of 156 GWh, highlighting the growing reliance on external sources to meet domestic demand.
The output from Bulgaria’s baseload power plants, which include both coal-fired and nuclear facilities, experienced a significant reduction, totaling 1.76 TWh. This figure represents a notable 15.2% decline compared to early 2025, underscoring challenges faced by traditional energy sources in maintaining production levels amid shifting market dynamics.
Conversely, the country has witnessed substantial growth in electricity generation from renewable energy sources (RES). Specifically, RES connected to the transmission network surged by 48.33%, amounting to 172.2 GWh. Additionally, output from RES within the distribution network rose by 14.37%, reaching 145.6 GWh. This trend reflects Bulgaria’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy mix and enhance the role of renewables in its overall power generation strategy.
