Romania’s energy generation and industrial production are set for gradual growth through 2029

According to the latest projections from the National Strategy and Forecast Commission, Romania’s electricity and heat generation is anticipated to experience a steady increase over the next several years. The outlook for 2025–2029 indicates modest growth beginning in 2026, with expectations of continuous gains throughout the following years.

The Commission estimates that energy production and supply will rise by 0.8% in 2026 compared to the previous year. This growth is expected to accelerate to 2% in 2027, followed by a further increase of 2.3% in 2028. However, this upward trend is projected to moderate in 2029, with an anticipated growth rate of 1.5%.

The industrial sector is also poised for expansion, with overall output forecasted to grow by 0.5% in 2026. This growth trajectory is expected to gain momentum, reaching 1.6% in 2027, followed by an increase to 2.2% in 2028. In 2029, industrial output is projected to ease slightly to 1.9%.

<pConversely, the extractive industries are predicted to face challenges initially, with a contraction of 1.4% in 2026. However, recovery is expected in subsequent years, with forecasts indicating a growth of 0.7% in 2027, followed by increases of 1.4% in 2028, and a slight moderation to 1.1% in 2029. This reflects a gradual rebound for this sector after initial setbacks.
