The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is assessing a significant financial initiative aimed at enhancing the electricity distribution network in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The proposed funding involves a sovereign-backed loan of up to €38 million directed towards Elektrokrajina, the distribution utility operating under the state-owned Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske (ERS).
This financial support is intended to play a crucial role in a broader infrastructure project estimated at €43.2 million. The focus of this initiative is on modernizing various segments of the electricity distribution system, specifically targeting medium- and low-voltage networks as well as substations.
One of the primary goals of the planned upgrades is to enhance the reliability and quality of electricity supply across the region. In addition, addressing technical losses within the distribution network is a critical aspect of this project. A further objective is to prepare the grid for an increased integration of decentralized renewable energy sources.
The modernization efforts are expected to improve the system’s capability to accommodate distributed generation, particularly solar installations, which are gaining prominence in the context of the region’s energy transition.
As per documentation from EBRD, this financing proposal is currently under review, with a decision anticipated by mid-May. Should it receive approval, final endorsement from the EBRD board could occur on May 13.
