In a significant development for the energy sector, Bosnia and Herzegovina has launched a comprehensive initiative aimed at establishing a national hydrogen strategy. This two-year program is now in its implementation phase following a recent meeting of project partners in Sarajevo. The initiative focuses on creating a coherent framework for hydrogen development and facilitating the transfer of technical expertise among domestic energy stakeholders and international collaborators. Key entities involved include the Association for Green Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Sources (H2OIE), Elektroprivreda Bosne i Hercegovine (EPBiH), Energoinvest, and Green Sustainable Solutions, with financial backing from the Central European Initiative and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
During the inaugural session, stakeholders shared insights on regional experiences while discussing practical pathways to incorporate hydrogen technologies into existing frameworks. Participants emphasized that hydrogen should not be viewed merely as a transient trend but rather as a long-term tool crucial for enhancing energy resilience, boosting industrial competitiveness, and aligning with broader European climate objectives. A primary focus of the initiative is to build local knowledge and institutional capacity, enabling a gradual and sustainable deployment of hydrogen solutions through various workshops, advisory missions, and study visits throughout Europe.
The project partners are tasked with developing a National Hydrogen Strategy alongside a detailed roadmap designed to assist companies and institutions in evaluating their technical capabilities, identifying limitations, and prioritizing key areas for development. With abundant renewable resources, an established industrial base, and strategic geographic positioning, Bosnia and Herzegovina views hydrogen as a strategic opportunity to decarbonize its industrial sector, enhance energy security, and deepen integration into the European energy market. This coordinated effort represents a pivotal step in systematically advancing hydrogen initiatives in the country while positioning it as a core pillar of long-term energy planning.
