Albania LNG terminal plans target Southeast European gas supply gateway

Adriatic regasification capacity and regional routing

Albania is positioning a proposed LNG terminal as a Southeast European supply hub. Under plans for an Adriatic facility, annual regasification capacity could reach up to 5 million tonnes. The project is intended primarily to serve regional demand rather than Albanian consumption. Proposed pipeline links are designed to move imported gas toward the Western Balkans and further into Central and Eastern Europe.

Argent LNG role and storage infrastructure memorandum

The terminal is being developed with US-based Argent LNG. Argent LNG has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Albanian government covering development of storage and regasification infrastructure. The project’s configuration includes connections that could support onward flows beyond Albania. These elements are tied to the terminal’s ability to feed regional systems.

Pipeline connections and potential swap arrangements

The proposed terminal could connect with the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline, the planned Ionian-Adriatic Pipeline, and the Fier-Vlore corridor. Reverse-flow and swap arrangements are described as mechanisms that could extend commercial reach toward more distant markets. The potential market reach is stated as including Ukraine. The scope would depend on how access is arranged across interconnected networks.

Supply sources, counterpart memoranda, and energy-security framing

US LNG is expected to be the principal supply source for the facility. Argent LNG has also signed cooperation memoranda with Turkey’s BOTAS, Ukraine’s Naftogaz, and Romanian transmission operator Transgaz. The terminal is presented as an energy-security project under the Three Seas Initiative. It is also described as an alternative to existing pipeline corridors.

Commercial requirements across national systems

The terminal’s commercial case is described as depending on securing pipeline access, long-term buyers, and competitive transport tariffs across several national systems. If these elements are assembled, Albania would gain a role in regional gas trading larger than the size of its domestic market.
