Albania has approved the development of a solar energy project in the municipality of Diber. The initiative is being carried out by the Albanian subsidiary of German renewable energy company Greencells Renewables. The approval supports continued international interest in Albania’s clean energy market.
Project capacity, location and concession term
The approved plan sets the installed capacity at 96 MW. The solar power facility is scheduled to be built near the village of Kastriot in northern Albania. The government granted the developer a long-term concession for 49 years. Construction and commissioning are expected to be completed within three years after final approval.
Site footprint and key equipment specifications
Project documents submitted to environmental authorities state that the solar park will occupy more than 426,000 square meters. The facility is expected to include approximately 137,150 solar panels. It will also use 268 inverters to convert solar energy into electricity. The generated power is intended for integration into the national power grid.
Role in Albania’s renewable generation mix
The project is described as part of Albania’s strategy to expand renewable energy capacity and diversify electricity generation sources. In recent years, solar projects have gained momentum as the country seeks to reduce dependence on hydropower. The Diber development is expected to rank among the largest solar developments in Albania once completed. It is also intended to provide additional clean energy to meet growing electricity demand while supporting long-term sustainability and environmental objectives.
