The operations at Unit 6 of Bulgaria’s Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) have been temporarily suspended for essential maintenance work. This shutdown, which began on March 3, involves the replacement of protective membrane components within the turbine system’s moisture separator reheaters. This maintenance is part of a broader scheduled technical intervention focused on equipment in the conventional section of the unit.
The new membrane devices being installed are manufactured from materials identical to those originally used, ensuring consistency in quality and functionality. Independent laboratory analyses have confirmed that these components meet all established safety and quality standards. Following the completion of these maintenance procedures, Unit 6 is anticipated to resume its electricity generation capabilities and reconnect to the national transmission network.
In light of recent operational challenges, Ivan Andreev, CEO of NPP Kozloduy, discussed the financial implications stemming from two unplanned outages that affected Unit 6 in December 2025 and February 2026. The unrealized revenue from electricity not generated during these outages is estimated at approximately 9 million euros. However, Andreev clarified that this figure should not be viewed strictly as a financial loss; adjustments to the unit’s annual maintenance schedule are expected to mitigate some of this shortfall.
This maintenance event highlights the critical importance of regular upkeep in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of Bulgaria’s nuclear energy production. As Unit 6 prepares to return to service, its operational readiness will play a significant role in meeting national energy demands and maintaining grid stability.
