CROPEX Reports Decline in February Electricity Trading Volumes and Prices

In February 2026, the Croatian energy exchange, CROPEX, recorded a total electricity trading volume of 905,983.6 MWh, marking a 0.7% decrease from January’s figures. This month-on-month decline is compounded by a significant year-on-year reduction, with trading volumes down 15.4% compared to February 2025. The breakdown reveals that 673,794.7 MWh was traded on the day-ahead market while the intraday market accounted for 232,188.9 MWh.

The fluctuations in trading volumes are mirrored by notable changes in pricing structures. The average daily base price on the day-ahead market fell to 107.49 euros/MWh, reflecting a sharp decrease of 24.9% from January. Additionally, the average euro-peak price experienced a substantial drop of 31.4%, settling at 113.69 euros/MWh. Prices on the intraday market also saw a decline, with an average of 104.68 euros/MWh, down by 28.5% compared to the previous month.

CROPEX has been operational since its launch on 11 March 2016, established through a partnership with Nord Pool, which is recognized as Europe’s leading electricity exchange. The exchange is co-owned by the Croatian electricity transmission system operator (HOPS) and the Croatian electricity market operator (HROTE). The intraday market commenced in April 2017, enhancing trading opportunities within Croatia’s energy landscape.

A significant milestone occurred on 19 June 2018, when CROPEX successfully coupled its day-ahead market with MRC markets through collaborative efforts of Croatian and Slovenian transmission system operators and power exchanges. This integration aims to bolster regional interconnectivity and liquidity in electricity trading.

The trends observed in February highlight ongoing challenges within the Croatian electricity market, particularly concerning demand fluctuations and pricing pressures that could impact future trading strategies and regulatory considerations.
