Turkey: Electricity production from gas increased in 1Q2016

According to the data from the Ministry of Energy, the share of natural gas in Turkish electricity generation decreased to 32.9 % in the first quarter of 2016, which is the lowest in the past few years.

Some 21.4 billion kWh of electricity was generated by using natural gas as fuel in the first three months of this year, while around 70 billion kWh of electricity was generated in total. Around 20.4 billion kWh was generated by using domestic coal, which is a 2 % increase compared to the same period last year. The production of electricity which uses imported coal as fuel decreased by 1 % and stood as 10.2 billion kWh in the first quarter.

Regarding renewable energy, the share of hydropower plant production reached 26.4 % of the total production, namely 17.4 billion kWh of electricity. Wind farms produced 3.6 billion kWh, which is a decrease of 1.1 % compared to the first quarter of 2015.

At the end of March, Turkey reached 74,039 MW of installed capacity. 35.4 % of this capacity is installed in hydropower plants, followed by 28.6 % in gas-fired thermal power plants and 21.5 % in coal-fired thermal power plants. 6.2 % is installed in wind farms and 8.3 % in multi-fuel plants, transmits Serbia-energy.eu
