Electricity traded on North Macedonia’s MEMO day-ahead exchange rose 74% year on year to 179.2 GWh in September, pointing to increased participation and growing use of the organised electricity market.
Despite the strong annual increase, trading volumes fell 10.3% from August, while the average clearing price rose 10% month on month to €150.49/MWh. The contrasting movements highlight continued volatility in both market activity and electricity prices.
Average daily trading stood at approximately 5,973 MWh, while the reported peak-period average price was €121.40/MWh. The lower peak-period price compared with the monthly average underlines the importance of delivery-hour patterns when assessing procurement costs and generation revenues.
Launched in May 2023, the exchange has significantly increased the amount of electricity traded compared with its first full year of operation. In September a year earlier, trading volumes stood at approximately 102.9 GWh, meaning this year’s figure represents a substantial expansion in market activity.
The increase in annual turnover points to a deeper and more active market, although the month-on-month decline indicates that trading activity remains variable. For market participants, September brought both higher year-on-year volumes and a higher average procurement price than in August.
The difference between peak-period and overall monthly prices also demonstrates why baseload averages alone do not provide a complete picture of market exposure. The timing of electricity consumption and generation remains a key factor in determining actual procurement costs and realised revenues.
