As Serbia approaches 2026, the country showcases a significantly enhanced renewable energy portfolio, with total green capacity now at 3,683.4 MW. This growth is attributed to several key projects finalized in late 2025, marking a pivotal moment for Serbia’s energy landscape.
Wind energy has been a primary driver of this expansion. The 66 MW Kostolac wind park has commenced trial operations, while the Cibuk 2 project has successfully synchronized 133 MW of its planned 155 MW capacity with the national grid. Currently, Serbia operates 13 wind farms totaling 807 MW, with projections indicating that wind capacity could exceed 1 GW in the first half of 2026.
The solar sector is also making strides, albeit at a slower pace. Utility-scale photovoltaic installations are contributing just over 192 MW, supplemented by an additional 126 MW from prosumers. This steady growth reflects Serbia’s commitment to diversifying its renewable energy sources.
Hydropower continues to serve as the cornerstone of Serbia’s renewable electricity supply. The country boasts 2,507 MW of conventional hydro capacity, further supported by two pump-storage facilities that add another 639 MW. This robust hydropower infrastructure underpins Serbia’s renewable energy strategy.
The contribution from smaller renewable technologies remains notable. Serbia’s grid integrates 48 biogas plants totaling nearly 49 MW, along with a biomass-fired plant of 2.4 MW, enhancing the overall sustainability of its energy mix.
Looking ahead, Serbia aims to achieve 45.2% of its electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030. However, the path forward is not without challenges; delays in several planned projects underscore the need for timely implementation and sustained momentum to meet long-term energy transition objectives.
