Serbian EPS Distribucija is taking over electricity meters

In an accordance with the Energy Law, Serbian electricity distribution system operator EPS Distribucija is taking over electricity meters from all system users and the first phase envisages the takeover of some 650,000 meters.

EPS Distribucija said in a statement that it also undertakes the obligation to maintain the taken over equipment and will bear the costs of future maintenance of metering devices and related equipment. It is noted that the take over will be implemented in several phases.

Out of a total of 3,684,000 electricity meters in Serbia, EPS Distribucija has so far taken over about 600,000 such devices. In the recently launched phase, 163,280 meters will be taken over in the distribution area of Belgrade, 168,610 in the distribution area of Novi Sad, 163,670 in the distribution area of Kraljevo, 104,260 in the distribution area of Nis and 50,180 in the distribution area of Kragujevac. In late 2020, the ownership of electricity distribution system operator EPS Distribucija has been transferred from power utility EPS to the Government of Serbia, thus enabling further development of both state companies, which will not be privatized or reduce the number of employees. The agreement was signed by Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Zorana Mihajlovic and Acting Director of EPS Milorad Grcic. Minister Mihajlovic pointed out that the final clear division between the activities would increase the efficiency of both companies, which will remain state-owned. The distribution system operator can start the process of obtaining the license for its type of activity, because it doesn’t have one at the moment, which is not in line with the law. She added that the state would do everything in its power to strengthen both EPS and the electricity distributor.
