Serbia: Determining the Energy Balance for 2021

Serbian Government passed the decision on determining the Energy Balance of Serbia for 2021 in late 2020. The document determines the annual amounts of energy required for reliable, safe and quality supply of end customers in 2021.

In 2021, the supply of crude oil for refining will be provided from domestic production in the amount of 0.765 million tons (21 %), which is 11 % less than the estimated domestic production in 2020, which amounted to 0.861 million tons. In 2021, imports will provide the required additional amount of crude oil in the amount of 2.980 million tons (79 %), which is 22 % more than the estimated imports in 2020, which amounted to 2.438 million tons.

The total domestic production of natural gas in 2021 is planned in the amount of 394.753 million cubic meters, which is 2 % less than the estimated production in 2020 (402.723 million cubic meters). Imports of natural gas will provide the remaining required quantities in 2021 in the amount of 2,163.4 million cubic meters, which is 8 % more than the estimated imports in 2020 (2,011.390 million cubic meters).

The required quantities of coal for stable supply of customers in 2021 will be provided from domestic production (98 %) and imports (2 %). The planned import of coal in 2021 amounts to 0.95 million tons, the same as the estimated import in 2020. The planned export of coal amounts to 0.1 million tons, which is more than the estimated export in 2020, which amounted to 0.075 million tons.

The planned capacities available for electricity generation in Serbia in 2021 amount to a total of 8,222.48 MW (power on the threshold of the power plant). Gross electricity production in 2021 is planned in the amount of 38,417 GWh, which is 1 % more than the estimated production in 2020, which amounted to 38,099 GWh.

The planned import (with transit) of electricity in 2021 amounts to 5,279 GWh, which is 6 % more than the estimated import in 2020, which amounted to 5,002 GWh. The planned export (with transit) of electricity in 2021 amounts to 6,045 GWh, which is 2 % more than the estimated export in 2020, which amounted to 5,943 GWh.

The planned consumption of electricity in the energy sector in 2021 is 4,230 GWh, which is 1 % more than the estimated consumption in 2020 (4,193 GWh). Final electricity consumption in 2021 is planned in the amount of 28,096 GWh, which is 2 % more than the estimated final consumption in 2020, which amounted to 27,519 GWh. In the structure of final consumption, industry participates with 31 %, transport with 1.3 %, households with 47.5 %, public and commercial activities with 19 % and agriculture with 1.2 %.
