Russian gas phase-out dates set replacement needs for Greece’s imports

August 2026 import flows into Greece’s transmission system

Imports into Greece’s national transmission system totalled approximately 7.3 TWh during August 2026. Around 3.73 TWh, or 51.1%, entered through Sidirokastro on the Bulgarian border. Over the same period, the remaining volumes were supplied via other entry points, with the Sidirokastro route accounting for the majority share.

January–August volumes and the role of Sidirokastro

Across January–August, total imports reached approximately 57 TWh. Of this, 22.5 TWh came through Sidirokastro, representing about 39.5% of the total. Volumes through the route were broadly unchanged compared with the corresponding period of 2025.

Planned end of Russian pipeline and LNG contracts

The phase-out timetable sets an end date for Russian pipeline deliveries under existing long-term contracts at September 30, 2027. A limited possible extension to November 1 applies where storage security is at risk. Long-term Russian LNG contracts are scheduled to end from January 1, 2027.

Replacement requirement and diversification constraints

The combination of pipeline and LNG contract end dates leaves Greece needing to replace a sizeable supply stream while maintaining gas availability for electricity generation and other consumers. With deliveries still entering through Bulgaria at scale, diversification requires firm alternative volumes and transport capacity. This is in addition to expanding access to additional suppliers.
