GRITA 2 interconnector: ADMIE and Terna progress tenders for 1 GW link

Procurement timeline for the 1 GW GRITA 2 interconnector

ADMIE and Terna are preparing procurement for the 1 GW GRITA 2 electricity interconnector between Greece and Italy, with commercial operation still targeted for 2033. The operators expect to launch tenders covering the submarine cable and converter stations by the end of 2027. Contract awards are expected in 2028.

Before procurement begins, technical studies must be completed and equipment specifications finalised. Contractor selection for seabed surveys is under way, with offshore investigations expected to start in early 2027. The surveys are intended to support the final cable route and provide information for designing the submarine connection and converter infrastructure.

Permitting, studies and joint delivery arrangements

On the Greek side, an environmental impact study is expected to be submitted shortly, with approval targeted during 2027. The operators are also preparing cooperation and joint procurement agreements that govern delivery of the project. These steps are part of preparations alongside ongoing survey work.

The immediate challenge is to complete surveys, permitting and procurement preparations in time to preserve the 2033 commissioning target. GRITA 2 would add 1 GW of electricity transfer capacity between Greece and Italy, supporting cross-border trading opportunities and renewable power exchange.
