Romania’s national gas company, Romgaz, has launched a public procurement procedure aimed at securing site management services for its 430 MW gas-fired power plant in Iernut. This project has encountered numerous delays since its inception nearly ten years ago, highlighting the challenges faced in the energy sector.
The contract is valued at approximately 4 million euros excluding VAT, focusing on overseeing the final phase of construction and commissioning of the facility. Interested parties can submit their bids until 10 March 2026, with an evaluation period expected to conclude by 19 May.
The Iernut plant was initially slated for completion in 2020; however, it now has a revised commissioning deadline set for 31 December 2026. The total investment in the project amounts to 269 million euros, with construction reportedly around 98% complete. The remaining tasks primarily involve final technical and operational stages. This extension of the timeline corresponds with a governmental decision made at the end of 2025, which allows projects backed by non-reimbursable funds to be concluded by the end of 2026, while enabling reimbursement of eligible expenses until 30 June 2027.
The completion of the Iernut facility is anticipated to significantly bolster Romania’s domestic electricity generation capacity. It will provide a flexible gas-based output, which is essential for complementing renewable energy sources and enhancing overall system stability within the national grid.
