Romanian PV output hits 2,634 MW record and exports rise to neighbors

Record solar generation at 11:59 AM

Romania recorded its highest instantaneous electricity output from photovoltaic generation during a peak period on 11:59 AM, when solar installations produced 2,634 MW. The figure was reported by transmission system operator Transelectrica. It surpassed the prior high of 2,580 MW, recorded on 29 May. Additional solar projects are expected to come online during the year, with further records possible before winter.

System conditions during the peak

The record occurred while overall electricity demand was described as moderate. Total national generation was around 6,000 MW, with output affected by the temporary unavailability of one nuclear reactor. Lower wind production and reduced contributions from several other generation sources also influenced total supply. Electricity consumption from the national grid was approximately 4,450 MW, partly reduced by higher self-consumption from prosumers.

Solar’s share in domestic supply and grid consumption

During the same period, photovoltaic generation became the dominant source in Romania’s power mix. PV plants accounted for around 43% of total domestic electricity production. They supplied nearly 60% of electricity consumed from the grid, excluding output from residential and commercial prosumers. The figures reflect how distributed and grid-connected solar output aligned with demand at the time of the record.

Distributed capacity growth and cross-border flows

Romania’s distributed generation base continues to expand alongside utility-scale additions. The country has more than 320,000 prosumers, with combined installed solar capacity exceeding 3,700 MW. Utility-scale solar plants reached approximately 3,340 MW of installed capacity, according to data from national energy regulator ANRE. At peak production, Romania exported around 1,600 MW of electricity to neighboring countries.

The higher solar output coincided with stronger cross-border electricity flows. It also reflected the increasing role of renewable generation in Romania’s power system during the record interval. Rising renewable capacity contributed to changes in regional power exchange conditions at the time of peak production.
