Romania OPCOM day-ahead and intraday prices rise while traded volumes fall in May 2026

The average electricity price on the OPCOM day-ahead market reached 109.56 euros/MWh in May 2026. The figure was up by 27.55% versus May 2025 and increased by 14.66% compared with April, when the average baseload price stood at 95.55 euros/MWh.

Day-ahead trading volumes fell during the month, with total volume at 1.11 million MWh. That level was 6.21% lower than in May 2025 and 2.47% below April. The average traded volume in May 2026 was 1,493.5 MWh/h, indicating reduced market activity.

Day-ahead transaction value and role in demand coverage

Even with lower volumes, the total value of day-ahead transactions increased to 120.3 million euros. This was 10.76% higher than in May last year, when the value was 108.6 million euros, and 4.58% above the previous month at 115.1 million euros.

The day-ahead market accounted for 33.3% of forecasted net consumption in May 2025. The figure reflects the market’s continued share in overall electricity demand coverage.

Intraday volumes decline as prices increase

On the intraday market, trading totalled 135,605.8 MWh in May. Volumes were down by 32.79% compared with May 2025 and decreased by 8.11% versus April.

Intraday prices moved higher despite the lower traded quantities, with the average intraday price reaching 99.01 euros/MWh. The level was 24.95% higher year-on-year and rose by 76.23% compared with the previous month.
