In the first half of 2020 electricity consumption in Romania amounted to 25.78 TWh, which is 7.1 % less compared to the same period last year, according to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).
The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 19.03 TWh, which is 9.6 % less compared to the same period last year, mostly due to coronavirus induced lockdowns. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 6.47 TWh, which is a 2.9 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 10.1 % amounting to some 278.9 GWh. Total electricity production reached 27.5 TWh in the first six months of 2020, which is 11.7 % less than in the same time last year. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 19.2 % and reached 9.38 TWh. Production in hydropower plants decreased by 23.4 % to 7.39 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda increased by 11.1 % to 5.96 TWh, mostly due to postponed overhaul of its unit 1. Production of wind power rose by 6.2 % compared to January-June 2019 period, reaching 3.89 TWh. Solar power production increased by 1.3 % to 882.5 GWh.
Electricity exports in the first six months of 2020 amounted to 2.55 TWh, which is by 18.2 % higher compared to the same period last year. At the same time electricity imports increased by 112.9 % and amounted to 3.68 TWh. Total production of primary energy resources in January-June 2020 amounted to 9,000 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 11.4 % less than in the same period in 2019. Coal production reached 1,151 million tons of oil equivalent (- 38.2 %), oil production reached 1,648 million tons of oil equivalent (- 0.8 %), while production of natural gas reached 3,694 million tons of oil equivalent (- 9.8 %).
