Romania: Electricity prices liberalization as of 1 July

In the context of the significant reduction of the price of electricity on the wholesale market, the Government plans to liberalize the price of electricity for consumers 6 months earlier, namely as of 1 July 2020, which will lead to lower bills for end-consumers, said Niculae Havrilet State Secretary at the Ministry of Economy and Energy.

Havrilet explained that the price of natural gas will certainly be liberalized as of 1 July. Both gas and electricity wholesale prices dropped significantly in the past month due to coronavirus outbreak, therefore there is a reason to let end-consumers benefit from these drops. The Ministry is considering introducing electricity market liberalization in advance, because ANRE can no longer impose administrative prices on electricity producers, following a court dispute with some producers, namely Hidroelectrica and Nuclearelectrica.
