Romania: Decrease in electricity production in 2020

In 2020, electricity consumption in Romania amounted to 53.46 TWh, which is 3.3 % less compared to 2019. According to the data published by the National Institute for Statistics (INS).

The data show that industrial electricity consumption reached 39.93 TWh, which is 5.7 % less compared to the same period last year, mostly due to coronavirus induced lockdowns. On the other hand, household electricity consumption amounted to 13.02 TWh, which is a 5.1 % increase. Public lighting consumption fell by 11 % amounting to some 514 GWh. Total electricity production reached 56.05 TWh in 2020, which is 4.6 % less than in the same time last year. Production in thermal power plants decreased by 14.2 % and reached 20.42 TWh. Production in hydropower plants decreased by 2.1 % to 15.5 TWh, while electricity production in nuclear power plant Cernavoda increased by 1.7 % to 11.47 TWh. Production of wind power rose by 3.1 % compared to 2019, reaching 6.95 TWh. Solar power production decreased by 1.8 % to 1.7 TWh. Electricity exports in 2020 amounted to 4.81 TWh, which is by 33.9 % higher compared to 2019. At the same time electricity imports increased by 48.8 % and amounted to 7.6 TWh. Total production of primary energy resources in 2020 amounted to 17,982 million tons of oil equivalent, which is 9.8 % less than in 2019. Coal production reached 2,567 million tons of oil equivalent (- 29.9 %), oil production reached 3,236 million tons of oil equivalent (- 3.1 %), while production of natural gas reached 7,290 million tons of oil equivalent (- 9.7 %).
