In a notable development for the renewable energy sector, solar photovoltaic production has seen significant increases across southern European markets during the week of March 23. Portugal led the way with a remarkable 31% rise in output, while Italy and Spain recorded gains of 19% and 13%, respectively. This upward trend marks the third consecutive week of growth for both Italy and Spain. Conversely, Germany and France experienced declines in solar production, with reductions of 11% and a slight 0.1%, respectively, reversing prior gains.
March 24 proved historic for Spain, which achieved a new record for solar generation on a March day by producing 194 GWh. Italy followed suit on March 25 with its own record output of 139 GWh. These milestones underscore the increasing capacity and efficiency of solar technologies in these regions.
Forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting suggest that this positive momentum is likely to persist into the week of March 30 for both Italy and Spain’s solar markets. However, a decrease in photovoltaic production is anticipated in Germany, indicating regional disparities in renewable energy performance.
Wind energy production also saw robust increases during the same week across major European markets. Italy reported an impressive 78% rise, marking its second consecutive week of growth in this sector. Germany followed closely with a 72% increase, while Spain’s wind generation grew by 47%. France experienced a more modest increase of 18%. In contrast, Portugal faced challenges as it registered a decline of 2.3% in wind output.
Looking ahead, AleaSoft projects that wind energy production will continue to rise in Spain, Portugal, France, and Germany during the week of March 30. However, Italy is expected to experience a downturn in wind generation, highlighting the dynamic nature of energy production trends across the region.
