Region, EU is increasing solar, wind power capacity to meet 2030 RES target

The renewable capacity in the European Union is set to increase in the coming years. Data shows the bloc’s pipeline of solar and wind investments is 1.2 times greater than the existing capacity.

According to Energy Monitor, among the 27 EU states, Spain has the largest planned investments in renewables, with 51,000 MW of solar and 29,000 MW of wind capacity, followed by Greece (24,000 MW solar and 15,000 MW wind) and Germany (3,000 MW solar and 35,000 MW wind). This huge pipeline of projects puts the EU on the
right track to meet its target of having 40 % renewables in its overall final energy mix by 2030, which was revised up from 32 % as a part of the EU’s Fit for 55 policy package.

Regarding countries in southeastern Europe, Romania is planning some 3,300 MW in wind and 2,300 MW in solar capacity, Bulgaria with 3,200 MW in wind and 1,500 MW in solar and Hungary with 2,600 MW in solar.
