In January 2026, North Macedonia reported a total electricity consumption of 848,192 MWh, alongside notable figures for other energy sources, including 47.88 million cubic meters of natural gas, 345,151 tons of coal, and 80,333 tons of petroleum products. The State Statistical Office indicated that domestic electricity production met 77.1% of the overall demand, with an impressive 99.6% of coal usage directed toward electricity generation.
The country’s total electricity production for January reached 654,356 MWh, marking a 12.5% increase from the previous year. Thermal power plants produced 173,556 MWh, which constituted 26.5% of the total output but represented a significant decline of 22.5% compared to January 2025. In contrast, hydropower facilities contributed 221,998 MWh, accounting for 33.9%, and showcasing a substantial year-on-year increase of 67.9%. Additionally, combined heat and power (CHP) plants generated 165,792 MWh, or 25.3%, reflecting a slight rise of 4.8%.
The renewable sector also made strides as wind farms produced 31,649 MWh, biogas plants contributed 1,690 MWh, and solar installations—including contributions from prosumers—generated 59,681 MWh, which represented approximately 9.12% of the total electricity output.
<pOn the trade front, electricity imports fell to 213,352 MWh, down from 324,717 MWh in January 2025. Exports experienced an even sharper decline to just 19,693 MWh, compared to the previous year’s figure of 90,351 MWh. This trend underscores a shift in North Macedonia’s energy landscape as domestic generation increasingly fulfills local demand.
The data illustrates a marked growth in renewable energy sources such as hydropower and solar energy within North Macedonia’s electricity mix. While thermal generation has decreased and electricity trading has diminished, these changes reflect evolving dynamics within both domestic energy policies and regional market conditions.
