Construction of the gas interconnector between North Macedonia and Greece remains on schedule, with the cross-border pipeline expected to become operational in 2027. The project is coordinated by North Macedonia’s Ministry of Energy, state-owned gas transmission operator Nomagas and Greek transmission system operator DESFA. The interconnector is designed to diversify North Macedonia’s gas-supply routes and reduce dependence on a single entry point and supplier.
Project coordination and supply connections
Once commissioned, the pipeline will provide access to LNG arriving through the Alexandroupoli FSRU. It will also enable delivery of Azerbaijani gas delivered through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline. The interconnector is intended to link the North Macedonian market more closely with Greek and wider European gas infrastructure.
Route length, entry points and network tie-ins
The complete interconnector is planned to extend for approximately 123 kilometres, including 67 kilometres in North Macedonia and 56 kilometres in Greece. On the Greek side, the line will connect with the DESFA transmission system at Nea Mesimvria, near Thessaloniki. The cross-border connection will be established at Evzoni-Gevgelija, while the North Macedonian section will continue to Negotino.
At Negotino, the pipeline will join the existing national transmission network. This arrangement defines how gas flows from the cross-border segment into the domestic system. The project’s routing therefore spans both countries’ transmission infrastructure from the border connection to the national tie-in.
Planned capacity and funding for North Macedonia works
Initial capacity is planned at 1.5 billion cubic metres annually. The technical design allows this to increase to 3 billion cubic metres through additional compressor capacity, subject to future demand. Construction of the North Macedonian section began in July 2025.
The North Macedonian segment is valued at around €60 million. It is supported by the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Union and the Government of North Macedonia. The initial capacity is described as large relative to the size of the North Macedonian market.
The longer-term relevance of the interconnector is expected to depend on downstream network development, industrial gas demand and possible transit or regional supply arrangements. Capacity utilisation beyond domestic consumption would therefore be linked to how regional gas flows evolve after commissioning.
