Serbia–North Macedonia Gas Interconnector Delayed to 2028 as Regional Energy Diversification Efforts Advance

Plans for a new gas interconnection between Serbia and North Macedonia are progressing, although the timeline for completion has been pushed back. Recent government announcements indicate that the pipeline is now slated to be operational by early 2028, a shift from earlier expectations of a 2027 completion. This delay underscores the complexities often encountered in large-scale cross-border energy projects, particularly concerning permitting and regulatory processes.

Construction of the interconnector is set to commence in 2026, marking a significant development phase for this strategic infrastructure initiative. Once completed, the pipeline will have an annual capacity of approximately 1.5 billion cubic meters and will extend toward Greece. This route aims to enhance supply diversification by providing access to alternative gas sources, including those from the Trans-Anatolian (TANAP) pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipped through Greek terminals.

The interconnector is part of a broader regional strategy aimed at reducing reliance on limited supply routes and bolstering energy security amid fluctuating global gas markets and geopolitical uncertainties. Authorities stress that improved regional integration is crucial for achieving long-term energy resilience in southeastern Europe.

Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, and Bulgaria are collaborating closely to enhance coordination on infrastructure development and information sharing. This cooperation is viewed as essential for strengthening the overall energy system across the region.

Furthermore, Serbia has taken proactive measures to secure its future gas supplies by reserving long-term capacity at the Greek LNG terminal in Alexandroupoli. The country has committed to securing 300 million cubic meters annually over the next decade, reinforcing its strategy of integrating into regional LNG and pipeline networks while ensuring stable access to diverse gas supplies.
