North Macedonia: Electricity exchange records strong trading volume growth in May 2026 alongside higher prices

In May 2026, North Macedonia’s day-ahead electricity exchange continued its steady expansion, with trading activity showing a marked improvement in both monthly and annual terms. Total traded volume reached 125,210.5 MWh, representing a strong 45% increase compared to May 2025 (86,321 MWh) and a 14% rise compared to April 2026, pointing to sustained growth in market liquidity and participation.

According to market operator MEMO, the average market-clearing price for May 2026 stood at €89.68/MWh, reflecting a 2.1% month-on-month increase. The slight upward movement in prices suggests relatively stable but marginally tighter market fundamentals, even as liquidity continued to improve.

On a daily basis, average traded volumes were around 4,039 MWh, indicating consistent and active engagement from market participants throughout the month. At the same time, the monthly peak price reached €49.9/MWh, pointing to comparatively subdued price volatility in peak trading conditions.

Since its launch in May 2023, the North Macedonian electricity exchange has maintained a clear trajectory of development. The May 2026 figures reinforce this trend, highlighting ongoing growth in trading volumes alongside the gradual deepening and maturation of the country’s wholesale electricity market structure.
