The hydropower sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina has seen a remarkable surge with the Višegrad hydropower plant, operated by the subsidiary Hidroelektrane na Drini of the power utility ERS, reporting a production of 161.69 GWh in January 2026. This figure marks a striking 155% increase from December 2025’s output of 88.34 GWh, and also shows growth compared to January 2025, when the plant generated 89.2 GWh.
The overall performance for the year 2025 has also been encouraging, with HPP Višegrad achieving an annual production total of 781.8 GWh. This represents an increase from the previous year’s output of 733 GWh, indicating a trend of steady growth in electricity generation from this facility.
Commissioned in 1989, the Višegrad hydropower plant boasts a total installed capacity of 315 MW, divided into three units of 105 MW each. The plant has an average annual generation capacity approaching 1,010 GWh. Its highest recorded annual production was noted in 2010, when it reached an impressive output of 1,283.05 GWh.
This recent spike in production not only underscores the operational efficiency of HPP Višegrad but also highlights its strategic importance within the regional energy landscape, as hydropower continues to play a crucial role in meeting electricity demands and supporting sustainability efforts across Southeast Europe.
