Greece: Reduced capacity for upcoming 3rd energy storage auction

The forthcoming 3rd energy storage auction for standalone batteries will now offer a reduced capacity of 200 MW, down from the initially planned 300 MW. This capacity will be allocated specifically for standalone batteries with a four-hour duration.

The auction will focus on two regions: Western Macedonia in northern Greece and Megalopoli in the Peloponnese—both areas previously dependent on lignite. Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, initially considered for inclusion, have been excluded from this round of bidding.

The reduction of 100 MW in capacity aims to reallocate funds to support additional projects under the Recovery and Resilience Facility. Batteries selected in this auction will be eligible for a subsidy of 100,000 euros per MWh, consistent with the subsidy rate offered in the 2nd auction, which covered two-hour battery capacities.
