Greece: Amazon invests in three wind farms to power operations and support renewable energy goals

Amazon has announced plans to power its operations in Greece with three new utility-scale wind farms, marking its largest renewable energy investment in the country to date. The company signed four power purchase agreements (PPAs) for these projects during the AWS (Amazon Web Services) Day in Athens in November. These wind farms will not only supply Amazon’s Greek operations but also contribute electricity to the national grid, supporting Greece’s broader goals for renewable energy development.

The three wind farms include the 44.4-MW Vermio wind farm, split into two installations—Vermio North and Vermio South—located in Central and Western Macedonia. Additionally, Amazon has signed PPAs for the 29.5-MW Koukouras and 35.4-MW Mesokorfi wind farms in the Peloponnese region. All three projects are under construction and are expected to be operational by 2026.

These PPAs are part of Amazon’s ongoing commitment to achieving its goal of carbon-free energy, as well as Greece’s National Energy and Climate Plan, which aims to generate over 80% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030. In line with this commitment, the wind farms will also help reduce Greece’s reliance on fossil fuels, which accounted for approximately 48% of the country’s power generation in 2023.

The construction of these wind farms is expected to provide significant economic benefits to local communities. Over 100 jobs were created for the Vermio project, with peak construction expected to employ up to 300 people, according to Aer Soléir, the Dublin-based developer behind the projects. Aer Soléir has also developed all three wind farms aligned with Amazon.

Lindsay McQuade, director of Energy for EMEA at AWS, highlighted that these projects are part of Amazon’s broader effort to support the transition to carbon-free energy in Europe. With over 180 wind and solar projects across more than a dozen European countries, Amazon is working to drive the renewable energy transition both for its own operations and for local communities.

These new wind farms in Greece are also aligned with Amazon’s Climate Pledge, which aims to achieve net-zero carbon across the company’s operations by 2040. The projects further support Amazon’s achievement of its 100% renewable energy goal, which it reached ahead of its original 2030 target. The company has supported over 500 renewable energy projects worldwide, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

Additionally, the wind farms will support Greece’s renewable energy sector, which, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), currently generates over 50% of its electricity from renewable sources like wind, solar, and hydro, while the remaining portion comes from fossil fuels.
