Recent developments in Europe’s renewable energy sector reveal contrasting trends in solar and wind generation, reflecting the complexities of seasonal production patterns across key markets. As of the week ending April 27, Germany’s solar photovoltaic production saw a notable increase of 11%, marking its second consecutive week of growth. This surge contrasts sharply with declines observed in several other major European markets. France experienced the most significant drop at 16%, followed by Portugal with a 13% decrease and Italy at 4.8%. Spain, however, recorded a modest decline of 1.9%, representing its second week of reduced solar output.
A highlight for Germany occurred on April 30, when the market achieved a remarkable milestone by generating a record 457 GWh of solar energy in a single day, underscoring its robust performance amid broader fluctuations in European renewable output.
Looking forward to the week of May 4, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting suggest a potential recovery in solar production for both Italy and Spain. Conversely, Germany is anticipated to see a downturn in photovoltaic output, indicating shifting dynamics within regional solar generation.
The wind energy sector also exhibited mixed results during this period. Spain reported a significant recovery with a 16% increase in wind generation, effectively ending four weeks of continuous declines. In contrast, Portugal faced the steepest reduction at 32%, while France recorded a more moderate decline of 14%. Italy’s wind output fell by 15%, continuing its downward trend for the second consecutive week, and Germany experienced a substantial decrease of 22%, one of the most pronounced contractions in wind generation observed recently.
As we enter May, forecasts suggest that Iberian markets may witness a rebound in wind production. However, France, Germany, and Italy are projected to continue experiencing reductions, highlighting ongoing volatility within Europe’s renewable energy landscape. This divergence underscores the need for stakeholders to remain agile and responsive to changing conditions within the renewable energy sector.
