In mid-March, European electricity demand exhibited a notable decline, influenced primarily by milder weather conditions across various regions. The week ending March 16 saw significant drops in consumption, with Portugal leading the decrease at 5.9%. Spain and France followed with reductions of 5.0% and 4.5%, respectively. Other countries, including Belgium, Germany, and Great Britain, also reported declines of 1.4%, 1.5%, and 3.8%.
The downward trend observed in Spain and Great Britain marked a continuation of their patterns from the previous week. Conversely, Italy experienced a slight uptick in demand by 0.2%, reversing a series of six weeks during which demand had fallen.
The fluctuations in electricity demand corresponded with average temperature changes across Europe during the same timeframe. Portugal and Great Britain recorded the most significant temperature increases of 1.5°C and 1.4°C, respectively. Other countries like France and Spain noted rises of 0.7°C and 1.0°C. However, Italy and Germany faced cooler temperatures, with drops of 0.9°C and 1.9°C, respectively.
<pLooking ahead to the final week of March, projections from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting suggest a mixed outlook for electricity demand across Europe. Anticipated increases are expected in Spain, Belgium, Great Britain, and France, while declines are forecasted for Portugal, Italy, and Germany.
<pThese trends underscore the complex interplay between weather patterns and energy consumption in Europe’s electricity markets, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring as seasonal shifts continue to impact demand dynamics.
