Slovenia’s electricity consumption from the transmission network has been on a downward trajectory, reflecting a significant shift in energy demand patterns. In the first eleven months of 2025, end users withdrew just over 9.8 TWh from the high-voltage network, representing a 0.9% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.
The monthly data indicates a consistent trend of reduced consumption, with November figures showing total withdrawals of approximately 1,035.6 GWh—nearly 2% lower than in November of the previous year. From January through November 2025, cumulative electricity drawn from the transmission system reached 9,824.5 GWh, slightly below levels recorded in the previous year.
Distribution companies accounted for the majority of this demand, consuming around 8,553.8 GWh during the eleven-month period. This figure exceeded initial energy balance forecasts by about 1%, yet it still marked a decline of 2% compared to the same timeframe in 2024. Conversely, direct consumers withdrew 868 GWh, which was nearly a 3% increase from last year’s levels but remained over 8% below initial energy balance estimates.
In contrast to the overall declining trend, the Avče pump-storage hydropower plant experienced a notable increase in electricity usage for pumping operations, which surged to 402.8 GWh—an increase of almost 18% from a year earlier and exceeding initial projections by more than 19%.
<pFor reference, total electricity consumption from Slovenia’s transmission network in 2024 was recorded at 11,024.7 GWh, slightly below levels seen in 2023. Current trends indicate that this gradual decline in transmission-level demand is expected to persist throughout 2025.
Several underlying factors contribute to this trend including ongoing improvements in energy efficiency measures, reduced industrial output, and an accelerated growth of individual and community-owned solar installations that lessen dependency on the national grid.
