Croatia: HEP upgrades submarine cable network to secure power supply for islands

Electricity distribution operator HEP ODS has completed the installation of a new 20 kV submarine cable connecting Tribunj on the mainland with the islands of Logorun and Kaprije. Spanning 8,150 meters, the cable strengthens energy security for Kaprije and finalizes an electric ring supplying the Šibenik archipelago.

Similar installations were carried out in June on the Kvarner coast, including a 12,650-meter cable from Lošinj to Susak and a 6,180-meter connection between Srakane Male and Susak. By year’s end, HEP ODS will replace 11 existing submarine routes and construct two new ones, totaling nearly 121 kilometers of 20 kV and 35 kV cables. The flagship project is an 18-kilometer connection between Hvar and Vis. The total value of the submarine cable investments is €33 million.

CEO Vice Oršulić emphasized that these cables will ensure a stable power supply to Adriatic islands for the next 50 years, boosting tourism and quality of life. The initiative is part of a broader €286 million infrastructure program, supported with €224 million in EU funds via the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. HEP’s total investment this year exceeds €830 million.

Key substation projects are also underway or completed in Dalmatia, including in Pirovac, Trogir, Zadar, Primošten, Split, and Orebić, aimed at expanding grid capacity and supporting renewable energy integration.
