Bulgaria’s Chaira Pumped-Storage Plant Rehabilitation Efforts Progressing

The rehabilitation of Bulgaria’s Chaira Pumped-Storage Hydropower Plant is advancing, with key units nearing operational readiness. Caretaker Energy Minister Traicho Traikov visited the facility recently to assess the ongoing refurbishment efforts, highlighting significant progress in the restoration of critical components.

During his site inspection, Minister Traikov reported that the refurbishment of unit 2 is nearing completion. Additionally, unit 3 is anticipated to resume operations by early April, which will enhance the plant’s capacity to balance electricity supply and demand. A contract has also been finalized for the repair of unit 1, indicating a structured approach to the plant’s comprehensive restoration. However, unit 4 presents substantial technical challenges, complicating its rehabilitation.

To ensure a systematic recovery process, Minister Traikov has mandated the development of a detailed restoration schedule. This plan will outline the sequence and timeline for remaining works and will be made available to the public, enhancing transparency in project management. The minister noted that while the plant was in solid technical condition approximately 16 years ago, equipment failures in 2022 have necessitated this extensive repair phase. He expressed confidence that the ongoing rehabilitation is being executed methodically and with a clear roadmap aimed at restoring full operational capacity.
