ALPEX Reports Significant Growth in Day-Ahead Electricity Trading

The Albanian electricity exchange, ALPEX, has demonstrated remarkable growth in its day-ahead market during January 2026, with total traded volume reaching 186.97 GWh. This figure represents a 10.9% increase from December 2025 and a substantial 89.5% rise compared to the same month in the previous year. Such growth underscores the evolving dynamics of electricity trading in Southeast Europe.

Breaking down the figures, the Kosovo bidding zone accounted for 123 GWh of the total traded volume, while the Albania bidding zone contributed 121.2 GWh. The average market clearing price was recorded at 93.54 euros/MWh for Albania and 101.65 euros/MWh for Kosovo, leading to an overall average price on ALPEX of 97.15 euros/MWh.

The financial implications of this trading activity are significant, with the total transaction value on ALPEX for January amounting to approximately 37.3 million euros. This marks a notable year-on-year increase of 24.7%, reflecting the growing participation and liquidity within the market.

ALPEX was established in October 2020 through a collaboration between Albania’s transmission system operator OST and Kosovo’s KOSTT. The exchange conducted its inaugural auction in April 2023 and currently boasts a membership of 36 entities across both bidding zones, indicating a robust framework for regional electricity trading.
